Changing the World

As we wrap up graduation season, I find myself reflecting on what I would tell my younger self. Like many graduates, I believed I was destined to change the world. Whether by running for President of the United States, making a mark through music, or becoming a lawyer, I envisioned a grand journey. However, my path took unexpected turns.

In my mid-twenties, after beginning my career, we decided to start a family, and I embraced the role of a stay-at-home mom. Now, 21 years later, I see that I have changed the world, but in ways I hadn’t imagined at 18. The most significant impact I have made has been through investing in relationships, particularly with my husband and children.

At my son’s graduation open house, I was amazed by the influence his leadership had on his peers. This was our youngest child’s graduation, and it was the third time I had seen a room filled with relationships and stories of impact. I realized that I had changed the world by focusing on the relationships around me rather than chasing grand ambitions.

I believe in equipping our leaders with the skills and networks to make a real impact in our communities. Reflecting on my journey has reminded me that changing the world starts with the relationships we build and the lives we touch every day. Let’s continue to invest in each other and our communities, knowing that these connections are the true catalysts for change.
