The Character Challenge
I recently read a quote by Erwin McManus that perfectly sums up this latest season of my life:
“It takes great courage for any of us to become the person we’re created to be. It takes courage to live a life of integrity and intention. It takes courage to live a life of compassion. It takes courage to live a life of generosity. It takes courage to love.”
As a politician running a difficult election, I’ve come to realize that this race was never about winning or losing a position; it was about maintaining or losing character. It was a true character challenge.
Throughout my career, I have focused on building up people and communities. In campaigns, we often hear that success hinges on leveraging fear or love. This recent campaign tested me to my core. Did I truly believe in upholding the character and values I’ve spent 12 years developing, or would I compromise them to secure a win? This was a profound challenge to my identity and principles.
While it felt like the stakes were incredibly high, I’ve come to understand that there is no price tag on character. Ignoring one’s values for a temporary position or title is a cost too great to bear. For me, maintaining integrity and staying true to my values and the people I serve is far more important than any victory.
In the end, it’s not about the title you hold but the legacy you leave behind. And I choose to leave one of unwavering character.
