Leadership Isn’t a Solo Race
I recently found myself at Phoenix Raceway, stepping into a world of roaring engines, split-second strategy, and fans who can spot a driver by the colors of their car from halfway across the track. NASCAR is not exactly my native habitat. But I had a secret weapon. His name was Alex.
Alex is the kind of race fan who doesn’t just watch NASCAR, he studies it. Walking the track with him felt like having a concierge at a five-star resort. He knew the right places to stand, the right moments to move, where everyone sat in the season standings, and which drivers genuinely love taking care of their fans. He translated an entire universe for me in real time. What could have been an overwhelming experience became pure joy because I had a guide.
As we talked, watched, and laughed, it hit me. Leadership is no different.
We all want to be the hero of our story. It’s human nature. But the older I get and the more leaders I work with, the more convinced I am that the real power sits with the guide. The mentor. The one who stands just offstage, pointing the spotlight where it belongs.
Every great leader I know has had their own Alex. Someone who understood the terrain a little better. Someone who offered perspective. Someone who said, “Here’s what you might not see yet.”
And every great leader I admire eventually becomes that person for someone else.
I’ll admit it. I want to be the Yoda in the room. Although I’m not green, we are probably similar in size. I need to work on the mysterious delivery of advice and maybe a good cloak. But truthfully, that’s the role that brings me the most joy, helping others discover their own strength, their own clarity, their own path forward.
Watching the race through Alex’s eyes reminded me how essential that role is, not just for me personally but for Leadership West. We exist to elevate leaders across the West Valley so they can lead boldly, serve generously, and shape their communities with intention.
You have your own race to run. Your own turns, pit stops, and finish lines. My hope is that through Leadership West, through our conversations, through our shared work, you feel supported and equipped for the journey.
